Job Description
READ THIS FIRST
This is an accountant role, not a bookkeeping role.

If your experience is categorizing transactions in QuickBooks, entering bills, chasing receipts, or running payroll — this is not the job for you, and we will not reply. We are hiring someone who has owned a general ledger, driven a close calendar, prepared the schedules an auditor asked for, and been the person who explains why an account moved.

If that describes you, keep reading.

About the Company
We are a California-based, multi-location retail and production company:

~10 plus retail locations plus cultivation and manufacturing/distribution facilities
~25 legal entities under common ownership, including operating companies, real estate holding entities, and management companies
We operate in the licensed cannabis industry. This is a fully legal, state-licensed business in California, but it is a heavily regulated, cash-intensive industry with unusual tax treatment (IRC §280E), excise and sales tax obligations to the CDTFA, and seed-to-sale tracking requirements. If working in this industry is a problem for you personally or professionally, please do not apply.

You will report directly to the Controller. This is a senior, high-trust seat with real ownership — not a production role in a large stack of accountants.

What You'll Own
Full-cycle month-end close across multiple entities: close calendar, journal entries, accruals, prepaids, deferred items, reclasses, and close binder
General ledger ownership — chart of accounts integrity, account mapping, recurring entries, and making sure the GL actually reflects operations
Balance sheet reconciliations with real supporting schedules for every material account — not tick-and-tie theater
Bank and cash reconciliations in a high-volume, cash-intensive environment across multiple accounts and locations
Intercompany accounting and eliminations — due to/due from, management fees, allocations, and consolidation across the entity group
Inventory and COGS reconciliation — tying POS/inventory system data (BLAZE) to the GL, investigating variances, and standing behind the COGS number
Fixed assets — additions, disposals, depreciation schedules, CIP rollforward, and tie-out to the fixed asset register
Revenue reconciliation — daily sales, discounts, excise and sales tax, and payment settlement tie-outs by location
AP and AR oversight — reviewing and controlling the work, not doing the data entry
Financial statements and variance analysis — monthly P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow by entity and consolidated, with flux commentary that explains the "why"
Audit, review, and tax support — preparing PBC schedules and workpapers for our outside CPA firm and responding to their requests without hand-holding
Process and controls — documenting the close, tightening cutoffs, and identifying where the current process is weak

Hard Requirements
Applications that do not meet these will not be reviewed.

Audit experience with a Big 4 firm — SGV & Co. (EY), Isla Lipana & Co. (PwC), R.G. Manabat & Co. (KPMG), or Navarro Amper & Co. (Deloitte). If not Big 4, then audit experience with a US national or large international firm (e.g., RSM, BDO, Grant Thornton, Crowe, Baker Tilly, P&A Grant Thornton, Reyes Tacandong). Please name the firm, your title, and your dates.
Hands-on general ledger experience — you have owned a GL, not just fed one.
Full-cycle month-end close experience — you have run a close from trial balance through to reviewed financial statements, on a deadline.
Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) from a CHED-recognized school. (BS Finance or a related degree will be considered only where the rest of the profile is exceptional.)
CPA (PRC-licensed) strongly preferred. If you are not yet licensed, you must be a BSA graduate who has sat for the CPALE or is formally scheduled to sit for it — tell us your status and your target sitting.
Excellent written and spoken English. You will be on video calls with US ownership and with our outside CPA firm.
Advanced Excel / Google Sheets — pivots, lookups, index-match, large-file discipline, and clean, reviewable workpaper structure.

Strongly Preferred
Experience with multi-entity consolidations and intercompany eliminations
US GAAP exposure (not just PFRS/IFRS)
Retail, restaurant, hospitality, or multi-location operations accounting
Inventory-heavy or COGS-driven business experience
Familiarity with QuickBooks Online and with AP automation platforms
Any exposure to US state and local tax filings, or to IRC §280E

Schedule
Full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday–Friday
Minimum 4 hours of daily overlap with 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM US Pacific Time
Heavier overlap expected during close week (roughly the first 10 business days of the month) and training
This is a long-term role. We are not looking for short-term project help.

How to Apply
Applications that ignore these instructions are automatically rejected. This is intentional — it's the first test.

Start your message with the word: LEDGER

Then answer these four questions in a video link directly in your application. Short, specific answers. Do not send a generic cover letter.

Which audit firm did you work for, what was your title, and what were your start and end dates?
How many legal entities have you closed in a single monthly cycle, and how many days did the close take from period end to issued financials?
Walk me through one balance sheet account you reconciled monthly — what the schedule looked like and what you did when it didn't tie.
What is your CPA status? (Licensed and PRC number / passed CPALE / scheduled to sit — and when.)
Please attach your CV and state your expected monthly rate in USD.

We move fast on strong candidates. Shortlisted applicants will do a short paid test — a real reconciliation with real messy data — followed by a video interview with ownership.
