Job Description
A fast-growing Brisbane-based building services provider — delivering electrical, data & communications, air conditioning, and CCTV/security work across commercial, industrial, body corporate and residential sites in South East Queensland — is hiring a remote Electrical Estimator. Quoting and estimating is currently owned personally by the business owner, alongside electrical design and on-the-tools support; this role exists to take that off their plate. You'll take scopes of work — tenders, floor plans, SLAs — and turn them into complete, accurate, ready-to-send quotes. This is technical design and pricing work, not data entry.
Hours & Setup
Part-time, starting at 20 hours per week (will move to full time)
Hours aligned to AEST (Brisbane) so quotes can move quickly
Fully remote
Room to grow in both hours and scope as volume and trust build — expanding beyond electrical into data, air conditioning and security estimating
What You'll Be Doing
Scope Interpretation & Design
Read and interpret incoming job scopes (tenders, floor plans, SLAs) and translate them into a buildable electrical, data, air conditioning or security design
Takeoffs & Calculations
Build takeoffs using Ground Plan (or equivalent tools such as Skycad) to map physical runs, cable trays and equipment placement based on the site
Run maximum demand and design calculations in Elek software for electrical jobs, factoring in site conditions (ceiling heights, access equipment, run distances) that affect materials and labour time
Pricing & Documentation
Produce accurate Bills of Materials matched to established price books (primarily CNW, with Lawrence & Hansen and others as backup), keeping supply and stock considerations in mind
Estimate labour time based on the physical realities of the job — e.g. running cable from a scissor lift in a warehouse versus a straightforward office fit-out
Finalise quotes — built, priced and staged in SimPro, ready for final review and sign-off
Compliance & Communication
Apply current Australian/Queensland electrical standards (2026 wiring rules) into every design
Communicate proactively on job-specific technical detail, flagging anything genuinely bespoke that falls outside standard scope
What We're Looking For
Experience
A background as a licensed or trained electrician (or equivalent trade depth in data, air conditioning or security) — most estimators come from senior tradespeople moving off the tools into a design/estimating career
Hands-on estimating or quoting experience — comfortable owning a quote from scope through to a client-ready document, not just entering data someone else has already worked out
Confidence reading commercial and industrial tenders and floor plans, not just straightforward residential scopes
Technical Skills
Working knowledge of Australian electrical standards and legislation (or demonstrated ability to learn and apply a specific country's code accurately)
Familiarity with SimPro, Ground Plan, Elek, or clearly transferable equivalents (Skycad, other CAD/takeoff and price-book-driven quoting tools)
Nice to have: experience across more than one discipline (electrical, data, air con, security), prior quoting experience for an Australian or other Western commercial/industrial market, and comfort using AI tools to speed up parts of the estimating workflow
Communication & Work Style
Strong written and spoken English for clear, proactive communication with an Australian-based team
Self-directed and solution-first — able to take a scope and run with it, escalating only genuine judgement calls rather than routine questions
You'll Thrive Here If You Are…
Technically fluent — you speak the language of maximum demand calcs and cable trays without needing it explained
A finisher, not a forwarder — you take a job to near-complete rather than handing it back with more questions than answers
Detail-obsessed — a missed run distance or wrong price book entry isn't a small thing to you
Comfortable owning a quote end-to-end — from scope to client-ready document, not just filling in numbers
Quietly confident — you flag genuine judgement calls, but don't need hand-holding on the routine stuff
Standards-driven — current code and compliance are second nature, not an afterthought
Growth-minded — you're keen to cross-skill into other disciplines as trust and capability build
